Abstract

The purpose of the study was to assess the extent to which peer observation and review of teaching can be effective in Ghanaian tertiary institutions. Twenty academic staff and 300 students from Ho Polytechnic participated in the study. The study was one group pretest-posttest design. The treatment involved teaching, peer observation and discussions. An observation guide and interviews were used to collect data. An alpha level of 0.05 was used for all statistical tests. The results showed that lecturers increased the number of class assignments they gave and provided timely feedback to students. Lecturers also became
more accessible to students and showed more preparedness to work with students. The lecturers who participated in the study found feedback from colleagues extremely useful. It is recommended that Ghanaian tertiary institutions give peer observation and review of teaching attention on their campuses.
