Abstract

The study examines the 2014 Revised Social Studies Syllabus for Colleges of Education in Ghana. Twelve tutors were sampled from six Colleges of Education in the Western and Central Regions of Ghana using the purposive sampling technique.
The main research instrument used was an interview guide. Data collected were transcribed and analyzed using qualitative procedures. The structure and contents of the syllabus were first discussed followed by the data collected from the
respondents. The study confirmed the perception held by many that social studies offered in the Colleges of Education in Ghana is integrated, based on the social sciences. It was revealed that the content areas of the subject are based on disciplines such as Geography, Economics, History, Sociology and Government. More so, inspite of the few gaps found between the syllabus and the JHS Social Studies syllabus, to a.very large extent, the Social Studies syllabus for the Colleges of Education is consistent with the JHS syllabus. Among the recommendations made was the need for tutors to adopt innovative approaches in teaching to enable them to complete the outline for each semester before End of Semester Examinations
